Starting with a vague expression and an uncertain context, I hope to provoke viewers into completing my portraits with their own mental image or narrative and then possibly overlay their own feelings. We are attracted to faces. If I fill the canvas with a big face then there is little room for leading context. The size and closely cropped image creates an elevated sense of intimacy. Searching for meaning, viewers may turn inward.
I create differing facial plains and facial features that are just slightly out of alignment. I frequently give each side of the face a slightly different expression. I use iridescent paints that change with lighting and point of view causing shifting patterns of light. I like to slightly alter the facial shading relative to the line work.
Witnessing these small changes might make these images appear more real as if half remembered memories, after images and prior experiences were affecting our perception.
